Questions
Everything people ask.
If something is not here, it usually means we have not decided yet, and we would rather say that than invent an answer. Ask us on the contact page.
- What actually is DateSMP?
- A dating service for adults where the date happens inside Minecraft. You match with somebody, agree a time, and a private world opens for the two of you with activities in it: questions round a campfire, a build battle, a snowball fight. The idea is that doing something together tells you more than a week of texting does.
- Is it free?
- Yes. Creating an account, matching, planning a date and playing one cost nothing, and there is no limit on how many people you can meet. We cover the running costs ourselves at the moment. Donations are welcome and entirely optional. They buy nothing, and they have no effect on who you are shown or who is shown you.
- Do I need Minecraft?
- For the date, yes: Java or Bedrock, either works, on one server. You can make an account, fill in a profile and start matching without it, and you only need it when somebody says yes.
- Do I need to be good at Minecraft?
- No, and that is close to the point. The game is there to give you something to do while you talk. Most activities are conversation, building or something silly; nothing requires skill you would have to practise.
- Do I need a microphone?
- No, voice is optional. It is offered on every date and plenty of people prefer it, but plenty of good evenings happen in text. It stays off until you turn it on, it is peer to peer between the two of you, and it is not recorded.
- Is DateSMP 18+?
- Yes. DateSMP is strictly for adults aged 18 and over. You confirm your date of birth before the app will do anything, and an account reported as belonging to somebody under 18 is locked while a person reviews it. We do not use a third-party age or identity verification service.
- How do I get on the server?
- Join play.datesmp.com like any other Minecraft server. You land in the Hub, where a code links your Minecraft character to your DateSMP account. After that, opening the Date Room and joining the server routes you straight to your date: no commands, no addresses to copy.
- What happens on a date?
- You open the Date Room, join the server, and get routed into a private world. It runs the activities you chose, in the order you chose them. Most take between five and thirty minutes. If you did not choose any, Presenter Mode picks as you go. Afterwards you return to the Date Resort or leave whenever you like, and you each give private feedback.
- Can other people watch?
- No. A date world has exactly two players in it and closes when you are done. There is no spectating, no group rooms and no audience.
- What is a Date Night?
- An event on the main server that anybody can enter: short dates on rotation, a new person each round. Where there is a limit on places they are drawn rather than handed out first come, first served, so being awake at the right moment is not a qualification.
- Can I join with a friend?
- You can both sign up, but you will be matched separately. That is rather the point.
- What do you do with my data?
- Hold what you put on your profile, who you matched with and what happened on your dates. There is no advertising, nothing is sold to anybody, and nothing you write is used to train models. The site uses Google Analytics to see which pages people get stuck on, which is off until you allow it and never carries your name, your email or your messages. It is all in the privacy policy, which is written to be read.
- How do I delete my account?
- Account, then delete. It removes your profile, photographs, messages, matches and decisions, and it takes effect immediately. Reports about you are kept, because a safety record that vanishes when somebody re-registers is not a safety record.
